Online Retailers

As an online retailer, the last thing you need to worry about is whether your site will be able to handle all the traffic it attracts. Committing to lots of server resource that will only be utilised during peak times is not a cost effective solution. At Steamhaus we understand how important it is to keep e-commerce sites online without overspending on the underlying environment.

Whether you’re cloud-curious, or a full-on cloud fanatic, we’ll help you embrace the power of the cloud.

blimpHow we can help online retailers

We understand that ecommerce environments can be complex and subject to peaks and troughs in visitors; we’ll take away the stresses that come along with this.

As a consultancy, we have the expertise to build an environment for your site to run on that automatically expands when you have an increase in visitors, and then decreases in size during quieter times. This means your hosting spend is intelligent and effective without compromising availability.

Our aim is to understand you and your aspirations, enabling us to act as an extension of your team. This continual partnership results in an environment that will be consistently:

  • Faster
  • Secure
  • Fault-tolerant
  • Cost-effective
  • Geographically distributed if necessary
  • Hosted in the most appropriate way for your websites or application

The end result being you get to concentrate on what you do best, rather than worrying about keeping your site online and responsive.

How we’ve helped our customers

Here’s an example of how Steamhaus has helped out a customer looking to move onto a Magento environment.

ahoy_logo-01Ahoy, a creative agency in Manchester, were pitching to redevelop the e-commerce site of a fashion brand. This client had grown significantly from when it’d first been set up and was now turning over several million through their e-commerce site. Unfortunately, the current site was falling over frequently and needed stabilising whilst a new site was developed. It was hosted on a dedicated server where the current hosting provider’s Server Management product wasn’t suited to the client’s needs.

Despite knowing these kinds of situations are almost always a can of worms, Steamhaus agreed to take over the management of the servers in their current location (specifying our Managed SysOps product) and immediately began monitoring the site 24×7. Our Cloud Architects then started to look into the server and associated applications to find out the cause of the stability issues.

Within a day or so we’d improved the situation and the site was stable, which allowed us to focus on improving performance.

Our Cloud Architects did a lot of optimisation work on the servers to reduce load times, which has obvious positive results in terms of the number of visitors who stick around and buy something. Additionally, we configured CloudFlare to further optimise load times by serving all static content from their CDN.

Ahoy are now building the client’s replacement site using Magento. We’re designing and building the new infrastructure that it’ll run on, working closely with Ahoy to ensure the two elements go hand-in-hand to enhance the end-user experience, not hinder it.

We’ll help with the details of the all-important migration to the new platform including monitoring both the old and new environments during this crucial time. After that we’ll continue to make sure the new site is always online and never restricted by its hosting environment, whether that be technically or financially.

Our migration and re-architecture process

Being hosting-agnostic allows us to create a service that isn’t restricted by a particular environment. It frees us from following the standard process of having a hosting platform first and offering management as an afterthought.

We’ll take care of everything for you using the following process:

Building the right technical solution in the first place

We start by working out both what’s technically and strategically required. Depending on requirements this will generally fall into one of three packages:

These packages are based around our most commonly requested services, however as a consultancy we tailor solutions around your business’ requirements.

Only once that’s clear do we follow up by partnering it with the right hosting environment. This goes hand-in-hand with what’s been specified above. Options to consider would be:

  • A true large-scale public cloud such as AWS, Google Cloud or Azure.
  • Our high-availability SteamCloud platform, based right here in sunny Manchester.
  • A ‘traditional’ hosting provider who offer dedicated servers if that’s what you’re after.

…the point being, you’ll end up with the most appropriate environment for your sites or applications.
